How To Find Information On College Savings AccountsSo, in this article I am going to do some searches to find out more about the "Coverdell College Savings Plan". I open Google, type a quote, then type the four words. I ignore the first three listings, which were the paid ones, looking at the first real listing which says "F&M Bank". Since I'm also trying to find out information on which are the best child savings accounts, that one seems very limited in that respect: I click CTRL-F to bring up the Find gadget and type "Coverdell", then search. It tells me a little about general information, saying, "(a) Coverdell College Savings plan allows contributions up to $2,000 per year per child. Earnings grow tax-deferred, and qualified distributions during the child's school years, including elementary and secondary education, are TAX FREE." So far I know little more than I knew before about Coverdell College Savings plans, in particular. However, don't stay too focused, as I'm really looking for a more broad category such as "college savings accounts". And, so I move on. This time I type "college savings accounts" (in quotes) in Google and click 'Search'. Using Google takes practice; this is what is termed, "Surfing the Web". If you've ever wondered how those super geeks seem to find things so fast, these are some of the techniques they use. I look further down the list until I come to a heading that sounds like what I want. I click one that says "Financial Planning and Investments :: Sholley Agency" because it also talks of other things I'm looking for such as "529 College Savings Plans". Nope, that's too broad-ranging. I click the BACK button and move on. So, this is how you'll search for what you want. Try using quotes around three, or four words. The quotes will limit the search to exactly that sequence of words. Try and think like a person might type, and you'll find pages better. If you think they might type, "A 529 College Saving Plan consists", then try using the word 'consists' after the sequence with quotes around all five words. You might get no page at all, but the one page you do get will certainly be about what they consist of. In this case, Google finds no page in the world that has that exact word sequence. However, it lets you see which are the paid listings. They are always at the top of where it says 'No Results Found'. So, when you are looking for things, try to keep your quoted words general, at first, such as "college savings accounts" and then go to more exact word sequences as you find what they might be, such as "529 College Savings Plans" or "section 529 plans". When I enter "Section 529 Plans" into Google, I get a nice page that says 'What is a 529 plan?' Something like this is exactly what I'm looking for. I grab what is called the URL by doing a 'Favorites->Add to Favorites' in Internet Explorer because I may need to use that later. savingforcollege.com/intro_to_529s/what-is-a-529-plan.php So, some things you might search for would be "american funds 529" or "best child savings accounts". |
